Nachtleuchtende Wolken sind hauptsächlich im Sommer zu beobachten. Es handelt sich um Wolken in einer Höhe von fast 90km, also fast zehn mal so Hoch wie "normale" wetterbestimmende Wolken. Bis heute ist allerdings noch nicht einwandfrei bekannt wie diese Wolken entstehen und was sie für das Klima oder das Wetter bedeuten.
Die ersten dokumentierten Sichtungen dieser Wolken stammen aus dem Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Es könnte sich so bei den Wolken um Staubpartikel des damaligen Ausbruchs des Vulkans Krakatoa handeln, aber auch um eine Auswirkung der zunehmenden Industrialisierung der Erde.
Nachtleuchtenden Wolken treten fast ausschlisslich in mittleren bis hohen geografischen Breiten auf. (Etwa zwischen Mitteleuropa und Mittelskandinavien) Nur dort sind die Temperaturverhältnisse in der Atmosphäre gegeben, dass sich in dieser Höhe Eiskristalle bilden können, die von der Sonne beleuchtet noch lange nach Sonnenuntergang zu sehen sind.

Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are most likely to appear on a summer sky. NLCs are clouds in an altitude of almost 90km, that is nearly ten times es high as usual "weather clouds" are. It is still no sure how NLCs develop and if and how the might effect the climate and the weather.
The first documented sightings of NLCs are from the early 20th century, just after the erruption of the volcano Cracatoa in Indonesia. Therefore it is possible, that NLCs build up because of the dust, which the volcano has blown in the upper atmosphere. But it is also possible, that NLCs are an effect of the growing industrialisation of the world.
NLCs are most seen in middle and high latitudes. (Approximately between middle Europe and Skandinavia). Only in this part of the world, the temperatures in the atmosphere are perfect to boild ice particles at this altitude. That far above earth's surface, these are still light by sunshine long after the sun has set, so they are still visible as bright clouds.
